Training
The LGU Training Squad is selected each year by the International Selection Committee from the top amateur players from Great Britain and Ireland.
The LGU and International Selection Committees' aim is to be open and transparent in its procedures. In order to assist all concerned, it is intended to produce guidelines for players which will include recommended events that should be entered.
In 2008, we will be selecting a team for the Curtis Cup which will be played for a first time over the Old Course, St Andrews, May 30-Jun 1, where Great Britain & Ireland will play the United States.
Our first priority is to get the very best players ready for this team. The Training Committee has put together a winter programme starting in December.
Once again we would emphasise that players unavailable or not included in our training programme, are not precluded from any team selection.
Some players are going to LET Qualifying school and if unsuccessful in obtaining their tour card, will remain Amateur. Consequently the Squad will not be confirmed until mid October 2007.
The LGU Training Squad consists of players who are all part of their national squads, with experience at the highest level and a long list of national and international titles to their names.
The Training Committee determine the training programme and organise the sessions throughout the winter months (Oct-April). At this level, training is focused on enhancing the player's game, encouraging them to improve their fitness levels and giving them the opportunity to practise their skills in a competitive situations.
Players are selected to represent Great Britain and Ireland in International matches and tournaments such as the Curtis Cup, Vagliano Trophy and World Team Championships. Players do not have to be part of the LGU Training Squad in order to be selected for a GB&I Team.
