Ricoh Women's British Open - Final Qualifying
Promising English amateur, Melissa Reid, saw off the challenge of all the top professionals when she carded a two under par 70 to head the field at the Final Qualifying for the 2007 Ricoh Women’s British Open over the New Course, St Andrews.Reid, 19, from Chevin Golf Club in Derbyshire, who earlier this year won the St Rule Trophy at St Andrews, made it a unique St Andrews double when she finished one shot ahead of France’s Ludivine Kreutz and two shots in front of English professional, Samantha Head, Denmark’s Iben Tinning, Koreans He Yong Choi and Sung Ah Yim, and two other amateur members of the LGU Training Squad, Rachel Bell, 25, from the Ganton Club in Yorkshire and Kerry Smith, 34, from Waterlooville Golf Club.
Reid seemed to be struggling when she dropped shots at the 335 yard par-4 seventh and the 205 yard par-3 ninth to go out in two over par 38 but she eagled the 454 yard par 5 tenth and birdied the 376 yard par-4 15th and the 195 yard par-3 17th to come home in 32 to post a total none of the other 122 competitors could match.
On a great day for the amateurs in the field, England’s Naomi Edwards, also from Ganton, joined Reid, Bell and Smith in the field for the Championship proper after recording a one over par 73 to share ninth place with compatriot Sophie Walker, Australia’s Rebecca Stevenson, America’s Dina Ammaccapane and Italy’s Tullia Calzavara
Two other amateurs, Ireland’s Danielle McVeigh, the 2005 Irish Girls champion who is currently on a golf scholarship at Texas A & M, and Sally Watson, the 2005 Scottish Girls champion from Elie & Earlsferry carded rounds of 74 and then battled through an extended 14-woman play-off for the final eight places in the Championship.
McVeigh and Watson were joined by Germany’s Martina Eberl and Anja Monke, Italy’s Margherita Rigon, Spain’s Beatriz Recari and Sweden’s Anna Nordqvist and Catrin Nilsmark while Spaniard, Laura Cabanillas, and Australia’s Karen Lunn returned the following morning to claim the first and second alternate spots.
