Royal Lytham & St. Annes again hosts the Weetabix Women’s British Open

The success of the Weetabix Women’s British Open Championship at Royal Lytham & St. Annes in 2003 has resulted in the Lancashire course hosting this year’s Championship, from 3rd to 6th August.

Royal Lytham & St. Annes has been the venue for two previous Women’s British Opens and is certain to generate huge interest from the knowledgeable golfing public in England’s North West. In 2003 when the Championship was last played there a record crowd of over 75,000 attended during the week as World No.1 Annika Sorenstam completed her career Grand Slam with a one shot victory over Korean Se Ri Pak.

“Lytham was a great success in 2003 and we are delighted to be returning so soon after Annika’s win,” said Andy Salmon, Chief Executive Officer of the Ladies’ Golf Union. “There was exceptional support from the golfing public and that underlines why this year, this testing championship course will again be host to all of the world’s top women players.”

Since 2003, Annika has retained her position as the No. 1 player in the world. However a new breed of talented, aggressive young players are coming through and they are liable, in the not too distant future, to be challenging for her position at the top of the Rolex Women’s World Rankings.

"I am happy to hear the Weetabix Women's British Open is returning to Royal Lytham & St Annes” said Annika. “It is a good test of golf and a nice venue for a Major Championship. Hopefully the great experiences I had when I won there in 2003 will set me up for a successful week."

Annika Sorenstam, Michelle Wie and Paula Creamer, currently 1, 2 and 3 in the rankings lead the list of 60 players already entered which includes Korean players Jeong Jang, the winner last year at Royal Birkdale.

In 2004 at Sunningdale, Karen Stupples played spectacular golf to win her first major. Hopes for a home win will surely rest on her shoulders as the top ranked English player, and also with Catriona Matthew the highest ranked player from the British Isles.

Players will be competing over Royal Lytham on a course measuring 6480 yards, 172 yards longer than 2003. The back nine has the more significant changes with only the 14th retaining its 2003 yardage of 418 while the other eight holes have increases ranging from 9 to 25 yards.
