The Continent of Europe win the 2009 Vagliano Trophy
Day 2 SummaryThe final day of the Vagliano Trophy turned into an exciting one. The continental ladies had already gained 10 points on Friday and Saturday morning. Another two points during the afternoon would have been enough to retain their title with a tie. However, the top players form the British Isles were about to mount a come back.
Rachel Jennings, Sally Watson, Pamela Pretswell and Lisa Maguire all won their matches today but it was not enough to prevent the Continent of Europe side retaining the trophy by a margin of 13 - 11. The Great Britain and Ireland team emerged victorious from the singles but victories from Marion Ricordeau and Laura Gonzalez-Escallon and halves from Caroline Hedwall and Caroline Masson took Europe to victory.
Final Standings:
Continent of Europe 13 points – Great Britain & Ireland 11 points

GB & I now have it all to do in the final singles session.

Day 1 Summary
With so many matches going to the 18th in the afternoon, GB&I were so close to turning round the morning deficit but it was not to be, and they finished the day with 4.5 points to the Continent of Europe's 7.5 Jodie Ewart led the order and was the first to lose, while Rachel Jennings halved the 18th in 4 for a halved match.
Next was Kylie Walker, all square and so unlucky to be blocked by trees for her shot to the last, and although she drew the ball round the obstacle, her ball finished in the semi rough to the left of the green. Her delicate chip hit the hole but went about 8ft past on the treacherous down slope and her opponents two putts gave another win to the Continent of Europe.
14 year old Leona Maguire played well all the way round and managed to hold on to to her lead for a 1 hole victory after a terrific shot from a hanging lie at the last.
News came of Rhian Wyn Thomas' win at the 16th, but with both Danielle McVeigh and Sally Watson losing all eyes were on the other "twinnie", Lisa Maguire, who had been up, but faced a barrage of birdies from her opponent Caroline Masson and was coming down the last all square.
In a very similar hanging lie as her sister, Lisa drilled the ball onto the front half of the green. Her older and more experienced opponent missed the green on the left, hit the hole with her pitch and finished 8ft past. Lisa's putt finished a foot from the hole and was conceded and Caroline holed her 8 footer for a halved match.
