Captain and Manager appointed for Curtis Cup 2008 & Vagliano 2007 teams
She will be assisted by Tegwen Matthews who has accepted the position of Manager of both teams.Ms McKenna has an unrivalled record that includes winning eight Irish Championships between 1969 and 1989 – she also finished runner-up four times – playing in nine successive Curtis Cup matches and playing in nine Vagliano Trophies. She was capped for her native Ireland on innumerable occasions and played in the Home Internationals between 1968 and 1991.
In 2000, she was captain of the GB&I team competing in the World Amateur Team Championship at the Sporting Club, Berlin, the fourth time Ms McKenna had been in that position. Twenty six years earlier Ms McKenna, in one of her four playing appearances in the Espirito Santo Trophy, helped GB&I to second place in the Dominican Republic.
“I am very really delighted with this great honour and look forward to both events. With the 2008 Curtis Cup match being played early in the year, at the beginning of June, it will be a challenge to pull the players together into a cohesive team,” Ms McKenna said, “Obviously at that stage, we will not have had a reasonable chance to see the team members in real competitive action. “
“After this year’s match in America, I will sit down with the Training Committee to plan out the next two years and build on what Ada has done over the past four years. However I do feel that it will be essential to give the squad members as much time playing in match play conditions as possible.”
Tegwen Matthews, the manager of both teams is delighted to be assisting Mary with the two matches.
“Mary and I have been friends for years, in fact since I was in my teens and just starting on my international playing career, she said. “I am certainly looking forward to working with her and with the talented crop of players who are certain to be selected for the matches.”
Mrs Matthews (Perkins) is Captain of this year’s Welsh team following a career in golf that started when she represented Wales aged only 14. She played in four Curtis Cup matches, six Vagliano Trophy teams, two Commonwealth tournaments, the same Espirito Santo team as Ms McKenna and was Welsh champion in 1976 and 1977.
