Continent of Europe win the Vagliano Trophy 15 - 9
The Continent of Europe has regained the Vagliano Trophy they last won in 2001 in Venice. They beat Great Britain & Ireland 15-9 over the Torrance course at Fairmont St Andrews today.Starting the second day with a 9-3 lead, the Continentals increased that advantage to 11-5 by sharing the morning foursomes. The afternoon singles were also shared, 4-4.
Carlota Ciganda won the top singles tie for the Continent by 5 and 4 against Naomi Edwards. Three up at the turn with wins at the fourth, fifth, seventh and ninth - Naomi won the eighth - the Spanish holder of the Ladies' British open amateur title lost the 11th be be pulled back to a two-hole advantage but she birdied the 12th to go three up and wrapped up victory by only winning the 13th and 14th. It was Ciganda's third win in four ties.
Krystle Caithness won her second match of the day with an outstanding performance against Pernilla Lindberg. The 18-year-old, playing in her home county of Fife, won five holes in a row from the third, including an eagle 3 at the 468yd fifth with a 52 degree wedge from 76yd. Six up at the turn, Krystle eventually won by 6 and 4.
Krystle's foursomes partner Breanne Loucks won another point for GB&I with a 5 and 3 victory over Denise Becker who broke the Old Course women's record on her last visit to Scotland for the St Rule Trophy. Breanne, two up at the turn, double her advantage with successes at the 10th and 11th and finish the game in style with a birdie 2 at the 15th.
Sandra Gal gained the trophy-clinching 13th point for the Continentals by beating Kerry Smith by one hole. It was Sandra's third win out of four games. Three times, Gal led by two holes on the outward half after winning the first and second. Kerry hung on to reduce her deficit to one when Gal had a double bogey 6 at 13th but Sandra bounced back to regain a two-hole lead at the 14th. Smith won the 17th to be one down on the 18th tee. The last hole was halved.
Melissa Reid got her first win with a gritty performance against Valentine Derrey. Melissa went into a two-hole lead with a birdie 4 at the fourth but her French opponent pulled her back to square wit wins at the fifth and eighth. Derrey edged ahead for the first time by winning the 11th but Reid squared at the 12th. After four halves in a row, Melissa won the 18th for a one-hole win.
Liz Bennett beat Emma Cabrera by 3 and 1 after turning one hole up with birdies at the fourth and eighth. She won the 10th with a par 5 and the short 11th with a birdie 2 for a three-hole lead. Bennett lost the 16th but clinched victory by winning the 17th.
With rain now falling, Caroline Westrup beat Tara Delaney by one hole. The Irish player was one up at the turn after birdieing the fifth but Caroline squared the match at the 10th and edged ahead for the first time at the 17th before halving the last for victory.
Anna Nordqvist birdied the last hole to beat Rachel Bell by one hole, won the first and fourth for an early two-hole lead. Rachel won three holes in a row from the fifth to go one up. It was a ding-dong struggle after that with the Yorkshire player either one up or square for most of the way. All square on the 18th tee, Anna produced a birdie at the last for victory to make the final scoreline: Continent of Europe 15, Great Britain & Ireland 9.
