Continent of Europe win all four opening foursomes at a blustery Fairmont

The Continent of Europe took a commanding 4-0 lead over Great Britain and Ireland in the opening foursomes session of the two-day Vagliano Trophy match on a bright but breezy morning over the Torrance course at Fairmont St Andrews.
The Continent of Europe went into a 2-0 lead by winning the top two foursomes matches.
Carlota Ciganda (Spain), the Ladies’ British open amateur champion, and Sandra Gal (Germany) beat Melissa Reid (England) and Breanne Loucks (Wales) by 4 and 2.
Emma Cabrera (Spain) and Denise Becker (Germany) won by 3 and 1 against the all-English pairing of Naomi Edwards and Kerry Smith.
Ciganda and Gal went one up with a bogey 6 at the fourth hole and never looked back after that. Two up at the turn, they went three ahead by winning the 10th.
Reid and Loucks won back the 13th but it was an isolated success and Ciganda and Gal wrapped up a 4 and 2 victory by winning the 14th and 16th.
The second foursome was a much closer affair with only one hole in it either way for the first 13 holes. One down at the turn, Cabrera and Becker squared the match at the 10th and went one up at the 11th.
Edwards and Smith hit back by taking the 12th to get back on terms but went one down again at the 13th, after which Cabrera and Becker stayed in the driving seat. The Spanish-German combination went two up at the 14th, lost the 15th but pulled away for a 3 and 1 victory with successes at the 16th and 17th.
Pernilla Lindberg (Sweden) and Belen Mozo (Spain) made it 3-0 for the Continent of Europe with a 2 and 1 victory over Tara Delaney (Ireland and Krystle Caithness (Scotland) who lives not all that far away from the course.
Pernilla and Belen were never behind after winning the first hole. Twice two down, Tara and Krystle won the ninth to be one down at the turn but Lindberg and Mozo won the 10th and the 12th to take a three-hole grip on the proceedings.
Delaney and Caithness mounted a late challenge by winning the 15th and 16th to slash their deficit to one hole on the 17th tee. But Lindberg and Mozo won the match by taking the 17th for a 2 and 1 victory.
The all-Swedish pairing of Caroline Westrup and Anna Nordqvist completed a great morning for the Continent of Europe by birdieing the par-5 18th hole for a one-hole win over the English partnership of Rachel Bell and Liz Bennett.
The Swedes won the first two holes but it was a ding-dong affair after that. Bell and Bennett won the fifth and eighth to be all-square at the turn.
Caroline and Anna edged ahead again at the 12th but Rachel and Liz won the 13th to level the contest and went ahead for the first time by winning the 15th.
Westrup and Nordqvist, one down on the 17th tee, finished strongly to square the match at the penultimate hole and win the 18th with a birdie for a one-hole victory.
