GB&I share honours in Saturday Foursomes
Great Britain & Ireland won the last two foursomes to finish, leaving the Continent 11-5 ahead with eight afternoon singles to come.Pernilla Lindberg and Belen Mozo increased the Continent of Europe’s overnight lead to seven points with a 4 and 3 win over Kerry Smith and Naomi Edwards in the first morning foursomes tie to finish.
What had looked to be a very tight match remained all square through halves at the seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th. Then Lindberg and Mozo edged ahead with a par at the short 11th and wrapped up victory in quick time with successes at the 12th, 14th and 15th.
Anna Nordqvist and Caroline Westrup beat Melissa Reid and Tara Delaney
by 3 and 1 in a tie highlighted by three birdie 2s – two of them by the Continentals.
Melissa and Tara got to two up after four but lost the fifth and the short sixth (to a 2) and were themselves two down after 10. The GB&I pair fought back to win the 11th (with a 2) and 12th to be all square.
Anna and Carolina then regained control with wins at the 13th and 15th (with a 2) before clinching the match with a bogey 5 at the 16th.
Great Britain & Ireland finished the morning session strongly with wins by Rachel Bell and Liz Bennett, and Krystle Caithness and Breanne Loucks to share the honours 2-2.
Bell and Bennett went one up at the fourth against Sandra Gal and Carlota Ciganda and never relinquished their lead. The all-English partnership went two up at the 10th and three up at the 13th and then held their opponents at bay with halves at 14th, 15th and 16th .for a 3 and 2 victory.
Krystle and Breanne went one down for the first time with a bogey at the 10th but immediately square the match with a par at the short 11th and then went ahead to stay with a win at the 12th. A birdie 2 at the short 15th put Caithness and Loucks two up the match finished with a concession by Emma and Denise on the 17th green.
