Title holders England win morning foursomes against host nation Ireland
The proven winning combination of England’s Chris Quinn (Hockley) and Christine Watson (Beaconsfield) continued their 100% form at the Senior International Matches, Ireland, as they took the advantage from the start against Mary Madden (Ballinasloe) and international rookie, Carmel Cahill (Hermitage), produced more impressive golf to go to three up after only seven holes. An Irish birdie two on the 138-yard par three returned the score to 2up, an equal match in from there saw England take the first points in the morning foursomes, a win of 2 & 1.Match two in the England v Ireland Match; English pairing ex Curtis Cup player Carole Caldwell (Sunningdale) and 2007 English Seniors Match Play runner up, Hilary Smyth (Pannal) took the lead and were five up after 11holes, won the 12th to move 6 ahead, Irish partners, Marilyn Henderson ( West Rhine), 2nd Irish Seniors Open and Sheena O’Brien Kenney (Grange), pared the 13th with a three on the 140 yard hole, a halve on the 14th was enough for England to clinch this point, and win the morning foursomes against Ireland.
The third game of the morning in the Wales and Scotland match, former Curtis Cup player, Vicki Thomas (Carmarthen) & County Champion, Denise Richards (Bargoed) faced the 2007 Scottish Senior Ladies Champion, Lorna Bennett (Ladybank) and runner up in the Stroke Play, Fiona Hunter (Baberton), this game was very close with the match on equal pegging to the 7th. Wales took the advantage to the 10th when Scotland birdied the 125-yard par three 11th hole with a two to square the match. Birdies on 15 and 16 saw Scotland celebrate a 2 & 1 win.
The final match in the morning foursomes puts the Harlech player Ann Lewis (Royal St Davids) & Janet Doleman (Rushcliffe), international player since 2003, out against Scotland’s Helen Faulds (Douglas Park), who played in the Senior European Team championships, and current Club Champion, Margaret Tough (Falkirk). An unlucky start for the Welsh side allowed Scotland to slip ahead after the first two holes, a concession on the 5th hole to Scotland put them two up and in pole position, the Welsh players faught back and levelled the match after 10 holes, Wales then claimed the advantage and won the 11th and 13th holes, Scotland held on with halves to the 17th, with Wales clinching the point with a 2 & 1 win.
