England win the Senior International Matches at Royal Tara
England retains the Senior Home International Matches for the fifth year at Royal Tara Golf Club, beating Ireland in their final match (5-2) to win the trophy donated by former LGU President, Sue Johnson. England have won this tournament since it began in 2003. Scotland are the runners up, scoring 3 ½-3 ½ with Wales just beating them by half-a-point for second place on a comparison of the individual games won.Final Results

Ireland 0 (6 ½ -14 ½ )
England’s captain Cathy Bowerbank said, “I am delighted with the result, we had a really strong team this week and they played fantastic golf. They loved the course and are a very happy team, which obviously breeds success. I am very proud to be their Captain.”
England’s Christine Quinn faced Ireland’s Mary McKenna (Donabate) in the first singles game of the England v Ireland match. This match was a real battle between these top senior amateurs. England got off to a great start, two up after four holes. Ireland had a birdie two on the 129 yard 5th hole, a six iron shot into three feet set up the opportunity which Ireland took winning the hole; a concession from England brought the match back to level after six holes. Another Irish birdie on the par three 8th hole from a impressive five iron into ten feet, brought the score back to all square. Birdie number three for the 2008 Curtis Cup Captain on the 11th hole returned the match to all square after conceding the ninth hole. A win on the 13th hole returned the match to Irelands favour, which it remained with Ireland winning on the 18th.
A delighted Mary Mckenna said, “ I played very steady golf out there, Christine (Quinn) just ran out of steam as she has played a lot of golf this week…its been a fantastic week here at Royal Tara, the club is outstanding and members have been so helpful and the course was in super condition.”
England’s Christine Watson successfully won her match 4 & 3 against Ireland’s Mary Madden in the second singles match of the day. England took charge from the start; a birdie from Ireland on the 6th hole brought the match back to one in front, the match remained at this position until the 12th hole which was won by England to go two up. A birdie on the 140 yard par three moved the gap to three ahead. Ireland conceded the 15th hole to give the win to England.
A victory to Ireland in match three between England’s Susan Dye and Sheena O’Brien Kenney, was another gripping game which saw England two ahead after three holes, they conceded the 4th hole and halved the 5th and 6th to return to level. A win on the 7th hole with a par put the English player one in front, not for long as Ireland produced a birdie four on the 412-yard par five to bring the match back to all square at the turn. Ireland then dominated the match winning 12, 13 and 14 to move three ahead and win 3 & 1 on the 17th hole.
England’s Hilary Smyth faced the experienced Valerie Hasset (Ireland) in the next match, a close game took place until Ireland got into trouble with a bogey 6 on the 9th hole and a double bogey on the 10th hole, allowing England to take control of the match and move to two ahead. England conceded 11, and lost 12 to return to all square after 13. England won the 437-yard par five 14th hole with a par and clinched the match on the 17th hole to win 2 & 1.
The last game saw England’s Pat Wrightson out against Ireland’s Eileen McMullen, England started well, leading by 4 after eleven holes. Ireland claimed back the 12th however only managed to equal the next two holes, the 15th hole was conceded to Ireland, back to two up, England won the match with a par four on the 16th, 3 & 2.
Wales and Scotland
The first match between Wales and Scotland put Vicki Thomas against Lorna Bennett, a very close game with Scotland taking the led of two at the turn. Back to back birdies for Wales on the 11th and 12th holes changed this score back to even. Another birdie on the par 5 14th hole, put Wales in front, Scotland won the 16th hole with a par to equal the match again, a final shared hole on 18 equalled the match.
The second match gave Scotland a point with Baberton’s Pamella Williamson taking charge from the start, the score being 4 up after nine holes. A win for the Scot on the 10th & 11th holes took the match to 6up, Wales made a come back to win the 13 and 14 to return to 4 down with three holes to play. A final win on 15 won the match for Scotland 4 & 3.
Match three between Welsh player Janet Doleman and Scotland’s Fiona de Vries, was very equal to nine, with Scotland one in front all the way to the 8th hole, Wales won the 9th to make it even for the final nine. Scotland won the next two holes to gain the led again; Wales stepped in to take the match to level with four to play. This match finished all square.
Match four between Ireland’s Jean O’Connor and Scotland’s Helen Faulds was a crucial match, which also finished all square after impressive performances from both sides.
The final match of the day between Denise Richards and Scotland’s Fiona Hunter, also played the full course finishing on the 18th hole in favour of the Welsh team by one hole.
