Wales and England take the points in the morning foursomes at Senior Internationals
Day two kicks off for the senior ladies home internationals at Royal Tara Golf Club, with some wet weather conditions early on, improving mid morning.A win against Ireland in round one, a confident Scottish team face a strong English team with the host nation Ireland playing Wales. The foursomes teed off with Scotland’s Senior Champion Lorna Bennett (Ladybank) & Fiona Hunter (Baberton) faced England’s usual partnership of Christine Quinn (Hockley) & 2006 English Senior’s Champion, Christine Watson (Beaconsfield).
Equal for two holes, Scotland conceded the third hole, a birdie from England on the 6th hole kept them at four up, a tight match ensued with the next seven holes being shared, Scotland pared the 133-yard par three 15th hole to take the match back to three up with three to play.
This English force proved too strong for the Scots as they won the match 2 & 1, despite a comeback from the Scottish pair, an impressive chip in from Fiona Hunter, won the 16th hole with a birdie 3 to take the match back to two ahead with two to play. All square on the 17th resulted in the first points to England.
Flying the flag for Scotland in match two, the current Scottish Seniors Stroke Play Champion, Kathleen Sutherland (Royal Montrose) and Fiona De Vries (St Rule), who claimed 6th place in the European Championships earlier this year, had a close match with England’s Susan Dye (Delamere Forest) & Pat Wrightson (Huddersfield). This was a closely faught match, a birdie three on the 264-yard par four 6th hole placed the 2006 Champions on three up, Scotland won the 8th and 11th holes to return to one down, England won the next three holes, including a birdie two on the 13th hole from a crowd pleasing forty foot putt from just off the green held by Pat Wrightson. The match finished 4 & 3, full points to England.
Ireland’s Marilyn Henderson, winner of senior order of merit & Sheena O’Brien Kenney runner up, played the former Curtis Cup player, Vicki Thomas and Denise Richards (Bargoed) in the first of these matches.
Ireland took an early lead, however it was the Welsh team that dominated the match, winning the 7th, 8th and 9th holes to move three into the lead, the 10th & 11th holes were halved, Wales won the 12th hole to move to four ahead, Ireland got one back on the 13th hole with a birdie two, match three up, Wales won the next hole and halved the 15th in 3’s to win the match 4 & 3.
Mary Madden (Ballinasloe) & Carmel Cahill (Hermitage) played Ann Lewis (Royal St. Davids) & Janet Doleman (Rushcliffe). This match really got started with back-to-back birdies from Wales on the 7th & 8th holes to move two up. Wales dominated the match from there and remained ahead, finally winning 2 & 1.
