England and Scotland dominate singles matches at the Senior Home Internationals
England win four out of five matches against Wales as they dominate the afternoon singles. Carole Caldwell won 6 & 5 against County Champion Ann Lewis, (Royal St. Davids). 51-year-old English senior champion, Susan Dye (Delamere Forest) wins her match 4 & 3 against Austrian Open runner up, Jean O’Connor (Newport). Christine Quinn, member of the 2006 winning team, continues her form to beat Denise Richards 4 & 3. Pat Wrightson (Huddersfield) wins by two up against three-handicap player, Janet Doleman (Rushcliffe).Vicki Thomas (Carmarthen) the current Welsh Senior Strokeplay Champion, won the only point for Wales against Sue Ellis (Ferndown) 5 & 4.
Scotland dominate their singles matches as they take the first three matches this afternoon against the home team, Ireland. Lorna Bennett (Ladybank) wins her match 3 & 1 against Irish golfing legend and Curtis Cup Team Captain, Mary McKenna (Donabate).
Former Scottish, Irish and Italian seniors champion Pamela Williamson, won 2 & 1 against Ireland’s Eileen McMullen, member of European Seniors Team that played in Sweden this year.
St Rule member, Fiona De Vries, current Scottish Stroke play Champion, confidently won her match 4 & 3 against the 2007 Irish Seniors Championship runner up, Valerie Hassett (Ennis).
Scotland’s Team Captain, Joan Marshall said, “ I am delighted with the team, they all contributed today, the passion was there, great team spirit. We need more of the same against England tomorrow, we will need to play our best to win”
Ireland won the next two matches, Sheena O’Brien Kenney, beat Margaret Tough 2 & 1, with Mary Madden winning one up against Helen Faulds. Rhona Fanagan, Ireland’s Team Captain said, “We had some incredible matches today against Scotland, they made a great come back on the last holes, this morning they holed a 10 foot putt to win the foursomes. Great golf and a most enjoyable match, we look forward to tomorrow.”
