England convincingly win their morning foursomes of the Senior International matches at Royal Tara Golf Club, Ireland. Nestled in the shadows of the Hill of Tara this picturesque, tree lined course sets the scene for these team spirited annual matches. Attracting four talented teams this competition gets underway with some impressive performances from the Senior Ladies. English players, Christine Quinn (Hockley) & Christine Watson (Beaconsfield) won their match 6 & 5 against Welsh ladies and former Curtis Cup player, Vicki Thomas (Carmarthen) partnered by Denise Richards, Club Secretary of Bargoed Golf Club, who first competed in the International series in 2006.
Quinn, the 2006 Senior Ladies’ British Amateur Champion who was also the runner up this year, lead the charge for England. A win on the first hole with a par five and a birdie on two got them off to a confident start. Wales then conceded the third hole to allow England to move to three up after three holes. A birdie on the first par three of the front nine moved England ahead by 4 holes. At the turn England were six up, Wales got one back on the tenth hole, with halves on the next two holes, score remained five up after twelve holes. England clinched the match on the 13th hole with a par three, to win 6 & 5 and get the first point of the day.
Match two see’s the Welsh team represented by Ann Lewis the 2007 Senior Match play winner at Harlech & Janet Doleman, runner up in the Welsh Senior Strokeplay earlier in the year, play against England’s Carole Caldwell & Hilary Smyth. All square through three holes, Wales conceded the fourth hole to allow England to move into the lead, a win on the 6th hole puts them two ahead, a win back to Wales on the 7th returns the match to one up and wins for England on 8, 9 and 10 put them four ahead. England remain ahead and win this match 5 & 4 to reach the maximum two points in the morning.
Scotland v Ireland
Number three on the tee, Ireland’s Marilyn Henderson (West Rhine) who represented her home country in this year’s European Team Championships in Sweden teams up with Sheena O'Brien-Kenney (Grange) versus Scotland’s Senior Champion Lorna Bennett (Ladybank) & baby of the Scotland team, Fiona Hunter (Baberton). This was a tight match despite Ireland being two ahead after three holes; a birdie on four for Scotland took the Irish pair back to one up, a birdie on the 6th hole for Ireland take them back into the lead which they keep until the 10th hole, match remains equal to the 15th, Scotland win 17 with a par and half the 18th to win the match one up.
Ireland’s Mary Madden (Ballinasloe) & Carmel Cahill (Hermitage) play Scotland’s Kathleen Sutherland (Royal Montrose) current Scottish Senior Strokeplay Champion & former Scottish Champion Fiona de Vries (St. Rule). Ireland leads the match all the way and by the time they birdied the fifth hole the score was three up. Scotland faught back and returned the match to one down after eleven holes. Some outstanding golf from Ireland produced back-to-back birdies on the 13th and 14th holes. Scotland won the 133-yard 15th hole with a par three, a half on 16 resulted in a 3 & 2 win for Ireland.
