Saturday FINAL RESULT

BELEN MOZO IS NEW LADIES BRITISH OPEN
AMATEUR CHAMPION

Belen Mozo, a 17-year-old from the Cadiz region of Spain, is the new Ladies British open amateur champion.
She beat Anna Nordqvist, the 19-year-old from Stockholm, who holds the British girls' open title, by 3 and 1 in the 18-hole final at Royal County Down Golf Club, Newcastle in Northern Ireland this afternoon.
And so Belen capped a week throughout which she had played exceptionally well. She was third of the 64 qualifiers. Anna was the 19th qualifier.

Mozo got off to a flying start with birdies at the first three holes to be three up on the fourth tee.
Nordqvist stopped the Spaniard's run with a birdie 2 at the short fourth to get back to two down.
Mozo regained a three-hole lead with a conceded par 3 at the seventh but was forced to concede the eighth to Nordqvist.
The Swedish player got another one back when she was on the green in two at the par-5 ninth for a two-putt birdie 4 while the Spaniard was bunkered and could not get up and down to salvage par.
Mozo had covered the first nine holes in an approximate three under par.
Nordqvist had a bad lie on a grassy mound above the green at the short 10th and could not chip close enough to match her opponent's par 3 which put Mozo two up for a fourth time in the match.
Mozo holed a seven-yard putt to go three up at the 12th with an eagle 3.
The long 13th was halved in birdie 4s and the short 14th in par 3s.
Nordqvist cut her deficit to two when she was conceded the 15th but she was running out of holes and Mozo clinched victory by 3 and 1 at the 17th.
The Spaniard, who had double bogeys at the eighth and 15th, was an approximate two under par for the holes played.

Saturday - Matchplay Final

The 18-hole final of the 2006 Ladies British Open Amateur Championship will be a Sweden v Spain contest between Anna Nordqvist, 19, from Stockholm and Belen Mozo, 18, from Cadiz at Royal County Down Golf Club, Newcastle in Northern Ireland this afternoon.
Nordqvist, the reigning British girls' open champion and the 12th qualifier, came back from two down after 10 to beat Maria Hernandez, the No 25 qualifier for the match-play stages and a golf scholarship student at Purdue University, Indiana, by 2 and 1 in the first semi-final.
It was the second year in a row that Hernandez had lost at the semi-final stage.
Mozo, the No 3 qualifier, beat Naomi Edwards, 22, from Ganton - the last Great Britain & Ireland survivor and the 34th qualifier, by 7 and 6 in the second semi-final.
Hernandez drew first blood against Nordqvist with a birdie 4 at the opening hole but the Spaniard bogeyed the second to be pulled back to all square.
The third was halved in birdie 4s and the fourth in par 3s.
Nordqvist birdied the fifth to lead for the first time.
The sixth and seventh were halved in pars before Hernandez won three holes in a row to wipe out the deficit and go two up.
Nordqvist bogeyed the eighth to lose her lead and then Hernandez got an eagle 3 at the long ninth to be one up at the turn with three-under-par figures to the Swede's two-under-par.
Hernandez continued her roll with a birdie 2 at the 10th to go two up.
Nordqvist produced a birdie 3 at the 11th to win her first hole since the fifth and cut her deficit to one hole.
The long 12th was halved in par 4.
Nordqvist birdied the long 13th to pull the match back to all square for a third time. After a half in 3 at the short 14th, the Swedish player went one ahead with three to play when Hernandez conceded the long 15th.
Nordqvist maintained her strong finish with a birdie 3 to go two at the 16th and a half in 4s at the 17th ended the tie with the Swede the winner by 2 and 1 with approximate figures of five under par.

Mozo and Edwards halved the first two holes in bogeys.
Edwards was still looking for her first par after three holes. She conceded the third to go one down.
The short fourth was halved in par 3s.
Edwards bogeyed the fifth to go two down. Mozo went three up with a birdie at the sixth.
Mozo made it four successes in a row with a par at the seventh and a biride 3 at the eighth to go five up.
Edwards had a chance to stop the rot at the long ninth after getting on the green in two but she three-putted to let Mozo escape with a half and remain five up at the turn with one-under-par figures.
After a half in par at the 10th, Mozo extended her lead to six holes with a par at the 11th.
A birdie 4 at the 12th made Mozo a 7 and 6 winner with roughly two-under-par figures.

SEMI-FINAL RESULTS

Anna Nordqvist (Sweden) beat Maria Herenandez (Spain) 2 and 1.
Belen Mozo (Spain) beat Naomi Edwards (Ganton) 7 and 6.
