England defeat Scotland and head for Stroyan Cup Win

England, the defending champions, are in a strong position to retain the Stroyan Cup with one day to go in the Girls Home Internationals at Fairhaven Golf Club, Lancashire. 

The Day 2 clash of Tuesday’s two winning teams saw England make hay while a strong sun shone. They followed up their 8-1 opening win over Wales with another 8-1 victory to smash the Scots’ 100 per cent record.
In the other match, Ireland, beaten 5-4 by Scotland in their first match, chalked up their first win, beating Wales 5-4 after trailing 4-2 overall at one stage of the singles.
 
England took a 2-1 lead over Scotland in the foursomes and were soon in a commanding position.
English girls champion Holly Clyburn beat Germany-based Rachael Taylor by 3 and 2 after winning four holes in a row from the fourth to be four up at the turn.
Kelly Tidy beat Sammy Leslie by 4 and 2 after winning five holes on the outward half and standing four up after seven.
England won their third singles tie through Nikki Foster’s 5 and 4 victory over Rachael Watton. Nikki won five of the first six holes and was six up at the turn.
 
Hannah Turland beat Eilidh Briggs by 3 and 2 after the first six holes were halved and the match was all square the turn Turland wrapped up her victory by winning the 14th, 15gth and 16th
Alexandra Peters won by 5 and 4 against Lesley Atkins Peters was two up at the turn and consolidated her position by winning the 10th, 11th and 13th. 

In the last match to finish, Heidi Baek beat Alyson McKechin by 2 and 1 to give England victory in all six singles against the Scots.
Heidi was two up at the fifth, again at the ninth and finally at the 15th with halves at the 16th and 17th enough to finish the match in England’s favour. 

Ireland pulled themselves out of a potentially losing position by winning the last three singles.
Wales, 2-1 ahead after the foursomes, lost that lead when Leona Maguire won the top singles for Ireland with some excellent play. She beat Natasha Gobey by 5 and 3 after being four holes to the good after eight.
Wales then went 4-2 ahead over all, thanks to Katie Bradbury winning by 6 and 5 over Carla Reynolds and Gemma Bradbury beaten Paula Grant 3 and 2. 

But Ireland’s tailed wagged to good effect. Emma O’Driscoll won a tight match against Chelsey Herbert by one hole and Lisa Maguire, playing in the No 6 position, made ir 4-4 with a 3 and 2 win over Wales’ Amy Boulden. 

That meant the overall result hinged on the Laura McCarthy v Kelly Miller tie. All square after 15 holes, McCarthy went up with a biredie 4 at the 16th and the last two holes were halved, leaving McCarthy the winner by one hole and Ireland 5-4 winners over Wales.
In Thursday’s final matches, England play Ireland while Scotland face Wales.
