England march on at Girls' Internationals
England, winners by 8-1 on the first two days of the Girls Home International matches, had a fight on their hands with European champions Ireland their opponents on the last day at Fairhaven Golf Club, Lancashire.On another beautiful sunny day, the England-Ireland foursomes were shared 1 ½-1 ½ pt a piece.
The Maguire wins, Leona and Lisa, won the top foursomes by 3 and 2 over Heidi Baek and Kelly Tidy after the first five holes were halved. The Irish pair won the sixth but lost the eighth and 10th before the Maguires took a grip on the match by winnint the 11th, 12th and 13th for a two-hole lead.
The 14th was halved in par 4s,the 15th in birdie 4s and Ireland wrapped up a 3 and 2 win with a birdie 4 at the long 16th.
Ireland’s Laura McCarthy and Emma O’Driscoll came back from three down after 10 holes to get a halved match with Hannah Turland and Hayley Davis. The Irish fightback started with a birdie 4 at the 11th and they also birdied the 13th to be only one down.
McCarthy and O’Driscoll were playing quality golf and produced a third birdie, at the 15th to square the match – and yet another birdie., a 2 at the short 17th, to lead for the first time.
But Turlanid and Davis raised their game to birdie the last for a square match. The five holes that were won from the 11th were also achieved with birdies.
English girls champion Holly Clyburn and Alexandra Peters won the third foursome by 2 and 1 over Carla Reynolds and Patrice Delaney to put the teams in for lunch on level terms.
The Irish pair had the better of the outward half, twice going two up before Clyburn won the eighth, the 10th with a birdie ant the 11th with a birdie to go from one down to one up. Reynolds and Delaney responded with a birdie 3 at the 14th to get back to all square, but the long 15th and 16th holes proved decisive.
Clyburn and Peters won them both with pars to go two up with two to play and a half in par 3s at the 17th ended the match in the English pair’s favour.
Natasha Gobey and Chloe Williams of Wales won the last hole of the last foursome to deny Scotland a lunchtime lead and set the teams up a 1 ½-1 ½ pt apiece for the afternoon singles.
The lead-off foursomes between Chelsey Herbert and Katie Bradbury for Wales and Scotland’s Ailsa Bain and Rachael Taylor finished all square. The Scots won the first hole but that was the only time they had the lead. Bradbury and Herbert won the second and fourth and were either one up or all square for the remainder of the holes.
In an exciting finish, Bain and Taylor squared the match by winning the 15th but Wales edged ahead again by winning the 16th.
The Scots came again to win the short 17th with a 3 to get back on level terms and the 18th was halved.
Scotland’s Eilidh Briggs and Rachael Watton beat Amy Boulden and Gemma Bradbury 3 and 2 in the second fouorsome. The Scots lost the first hole but won the second and third and held the initiative for the remainder of the match. Three up after 10, Briggs and Watton were pulled back to a two-hole lead after the 11th and again at the 14th after they had won the 13th.
The Scots won the 15th to go three up again and halved the 16th for victory.
Alyson McKechin and Sammy Leslie were three up after four holes on Wales’ Natasha Gobey and Chloe Williams in the third foursome but the Welsh pair won the 5th, the 11th and the 13th to get back on level terms. Gobey and Williams kept up their winning run by going ahead at the 15th with a par 5. McKechin and Leslie broke their no-win sequence with a birdie 4 at the 16th to square the match again. The 17th was halved before a par 5 at the last was enough to give Wales victory by one hole.
