Bonetti and Sedda reach Final
The Girls’ British open amateur final this afternoon will feature the French women’s champion, Alexandra Bonetti, from Paris, and the Italian girls’ title-holder, Laura Sedda from Vicenza over 18 holes at sunny Royal Belfast Golf Club.In the morning semi-finals, the run of Ireland’s 15-year-old Lisa Maguire (Slieve Russell) ended in disappointment for the home supporters. The Curtis Cup player was not at her best in losing by 3 and 2 to 18-year-old Bonetti who was roughly two over par for the 16 holes play. Lisa was five over the card.
In the other semi-final, Laura Sedda, a former Scottish Under-16 girls’ open champion, was three over par in winning by 1 hole against Spain’s Andrea Villarasau who was roughly five over par for the round.
Lisa left herself with it all to do when she fell three down after only four holes, bogeying the first, second and fourth to lose them to pars.
Bonetti bogeyed the sixth to go back to two down but doubled her lead when Maguire bogeyed the seventh and eighth on her way to an outward half of 40 (five over par).
A birdie by Maguire at the 10th suggested she was about to mount a comeback as she played the holes from then on well in the quarter-finals. But it was not to be. She bogeyed the 11th to go four down for a second time.
Maguire’s putting was improving. She holed a testing five-footer for a half at the 12th and then stroked him 25ft putt for a birdie 3 at the 13th But Bonetti followed her in from15ft for a half in birdies.
Lisa three-putted the 14th where Bonetti was bunkered, the Irish girl missing from 3ft to let her opponent off with a half in bogeys. Bonetti was bunkered against the 15th and this time it cost her the hole, Maguire getting a solid 4.
Three down with three to play, Lisa needed a birdie at the long 16th but could not hole the 20ft putt for a 4 and the hole was halved, leaving Bonetti the winner by 3 and 2.
Sedda, conqueror of the No 1 seed Julie Yang and the defending champion, Perrine Delacour in earlier rounds, made a flyins tart against Andrea Vilarasau and was three up after three holes with par-birdie-par figures.
The Spanish player got one back when Sedda bogeyed the long fifth but Sedda got her second birdie of the opening holes, at the sixth to restore a three-hole lead.
The Italian then bogeyed the short seventh to lose that and go back to two up. Vilarasau closed the gap to one hole with a birdie 3 at the 10th and was back on level terms for the first time since the first tee when Sedda bogeyed the short 11th.
The Spanish player then three-putted the 12th to slip one down again and she also bogeyed the 14th to go two down. The 15th was halved in bogey 5s before Vilarasau birdied the 16th to be one down with two to play.
The 17th was halved in 3s. Perhaps showing a slight touch of nerves, both players three-putted the 18th to halve the hole in bogey 6s and bring the match to an end with Sedda the winner by one hole.
Entry is free and spectators are welcome.
