Wales win the 2008 Senior Home Internationals
Day 3 SinglesWales held off a strong English singles performance to capture their maiden Senior Home International Match title. Wales' win has broken up England's dominance of the event which has seen them every year since the matches commenced in 2003.
Vicki Thomas lead the way capturing an important half point for Wales before Ann Lewis sealed the win with her 4 & 3 triumph over Barbara Laird. Jane Rees added another half point for good measure as she halved with Chris Quinn and Wales ran out 5 - 3 winners.
The Scottish team sealed third place with a 5 1/2 - 2 1/2 win over Ireland, relegating them to 4th position and the dreaded 'wooden spoon'.
Day 3 Foursomes
Wales turned in a fantastic performance in the morning foursomes to surprise everyone and lead England 3-0 at the interval.
Wales won all three foursomes clinching the final match after England went into the water on the 17th and conceded the hole to Wales's foursome pairing of Ann Lewis and Denise Richards.
England now need a strong singles session if they are to succeed in their quest to win a sixth straight Senior Home International crown.
Scotland meanwhile lead Ireland 2 1/2 - 1/2 in the match which will decide the third and fourth spots.
Hopefully the weather will remain kind for the singles and some spectators will be able to join us for an exciting afternoon's play.
Day 2 Singles
England managed to hold off a strong Scottish challenge to eventually triumph by a 3-2 margin in their singles session and take the overall series 6-2.
Important English singles wins came from Janet Collingham who won by a 4 & 2 margin against Heather Anderson while Christine Stirling overcame Fiona Hunter (4 & 3). Although Scotland lost the overall match to England, a strong last 3 holes from Jill Harrison rescued an almost written off half against Christine Watson and gives them hope of avoiding the dreaded wooden spoon when they play off against Ireland for that honour tommorrow.
Wales continued their impressive campaign winning all five singles matches against Ireland to take the series 7-1. Standout singles performances for Wales included wins by Jane Rees (4 & 3) and Janet Doleman (3 & 1).
England now bid to win their sixth successive Senior Home International Matches as they face Wales in tomorrow’s title decider.
Day 2 Foursomes
A blustery morning foursomes session saw joint leaders England and Wales both take the advantage against their respective opponents into this afternoon’s singles session.
Ireland managed to win their first game point of the campaign after Helen Jones and Sheena O’Brien Kenney defeated Jane Rees and Janet Doleman by a 2 & 1 margin but Wales will take the advantage into the afternoon session after winning the final two foursomes convincingly.
England completed a second clean sweep of the foursomes as they lead Scotland 3-0 after the morning session. Chris Quinn and Christine Watson combined well in the first of England's foursome’s pairings to win by a 4 & 3 margin against the Scottish duo of Lorna Bennett and Fiona de Vries while Chris Stirling and Carolyn Kirk came from behind to defeat Fiona Hunter and Jill Harrison by a 2 hole margin.
Day 1 Singles
Wales and England ended the day as joint leaders on day 1 at the 2008 Senior Home Internationals.
Both teams enjoyed success in the day 1 singles session with Wales coming from behind to win four out of the five singles and eventually pip Scotland 5-3 while England won four and a half points out of a possible five to comfortably defeat Ireland.
Standout Welsh singles performances came from Helen Joyce (Long Ashton) who won by a 3 & 2 margin against Heather Anderson and Royal St. David's player Ann Lewis who triumphed 4 & 3 over Jill Harrison.
England enjoyed a similarly successful singles session only dropping half a point against Ireland. England were always in control after their 3-0 morning foursomes win but Ireland put up a determined performance in the afternoon. Ireland's only half point came from Sheena O'Brien Kenney who at two up with two to play looked in complete control against Susan Dye. But the recent runner up at this year's Ladies' British Seniors was not to be undone and a slightly misjudged shot into the 17th by Sheena gave her the glimmer of hope that she needed, a similarly uncharacteristic approach to 18 let her English opponent take full advantage and rescue an unlikely half point.
Day 2 promises to be even more exciting as England face Scotland while Ireland will look to make up for a disapointing start as they take on joint leaders Wales.
Entry is Free and spectators are welcome.
Day 1 Foursomes
Scotland and England emerged victorious after the foursomes session on a rather damp first morning at the 2008 Seniors' Home International Matches which are being contested over Little Aston.
England triumphed in all their morning foursomes with notable wins coming from the 2006 British Seniors' Champion Christine Quinn and her partner Christine Watson who came from 2 holes down to eventually win their match 3 & 2 against Ireland's pairing of Helen Jones and Sheena O'Brien Kenney while Janet Collingham and Barbara Laird triumphed 6 & 5 against Violet McBride and Marilyn Henderson.
Scotland also won their morning foursomes session thanks to wins from Lorna Bennett and Fiona De Vries as well as Jill Harrison and Fiona Hunter.
This afternoon sees 5 singles matches from each side as the teams look to get their 2008 campaign's off to winning starts.
