All teams have equal points after morning foursomes in Home Internationals at Dunbar
Dunbar’s well defined links golf course on the shores of the north sea becomes the stage for the Home International Matches as the morning foursomes tee off.With the Isle of May and Bass Rock in the distance the views are spectacular as the best amateur ladies gather from the UK and Ireland to compete for the coveted team trophy award.
Match one combines Strathaven’s Jenna Wilson recent Scottish Ladies’ Amateur Champion with the 2007 GB & I Vagliano reserve, Michelle Thomson (McDonald) against the Irish sisters, Tara & Karen Delaney from Carlow.
A birdie on the par 5, 459 yard first hole saw Scotland off to a flying start, with wins on the next two holes they moved to three up. Ireland then came back with an eagle two on the fourth hole produced from holing their nine iron second shot, with hole five conceded by Scotland to bring the match back to Scotland leading one up.
As they headed towards the Barns Ness Lighthouse, the Scots remain two up after nine. Ireland won the 13th to move one up, however Thomson chipped to two inches on fourteen to win the hole and take the match back to all square. This pattern followed with the match resulting in half points as they shared 17 and 18.
In match two, Scotland, represented by Laura Murray (Alford) and Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar) against Daniellle MvVeigh, Royal Co. Down Ladies’ partnered with Marian Riordan (Tipperary). After a steady two holes which they halved, Ireland went onto win the third, fifth and sixth to move three ahead with Scotland winning the eigth and ninth holes to bring the score back to one down.
Scotland won the tenth with a par and then halved the next two to stay even after twelve. The next three holes where shared then Ireland moved in front taking the fourteenth with a bogey, they halved fifteen, Scotland conceded sixteen and won back seventeen to go one down with one to play. A half on 18 resulted in Ireland gaining the point.
Match three brought Emily Ogilvy and Scottish Girls' Champion Carly Booth together against Maura Morrin and Niamh Kitching. Scotland held their own and completed the first nine holes three up, a win on the tenth hole took Scotland to four up then the Irish pairing came back with up and down wins to keep the match at three up to the Scots after fifteen. This closely fought match resulted in a 3 & 1 win for Scotland.
Match four includes the experienced English pair Naomi Edwards, 24 and Kerry Smith who teed off against Sahra Hassan and Becky Harries for Wales. This match was tight and resulted in a halved match.
Match five resulted in a 5 & 4 win for England's Rachel Jennings and Danielle Montgomery against Lydia Hall and Lucy Gould. This match went to six up after twelve holes with Wales winning back one to take the match onto the thirteenth which then resulted in a half to continue to 14 which was halved resulting in a point for England.
Welsh players, Stephanie Evans and Tara Davies, won the last match of the morning 3 & 2 against England players, Rachel Bell and Liz Bennett both members of the 2007 Vagliano GB & I team.
Singles matches tee off with all teams at equal positions after first morning.
Derbyshire’s Melissa Reid has had to pull out of the England team to seek treatment for a wrist injury. Reserve Holly Aitchison from Bedfordshire has joined the team. Breanne Louks has also suffered with injury this week.
