Teams gather for Day 2 Home International Matches at Dunbar.
Calm conditions await the International teams this morning as they prepare for day two of these top quality golf matches.The home side, Scotland take on the 2006 winners’ England today with Wales playing last years’ runners up, Ireland.
Match 1: Sahra Hassan & Becky Harries v Niamh Kitching & Tara Delaney
Welsh player Sahra Hassan, 19, who reached the quarter finals of this years Ladies’ British Amateur heads out with Becky Harries (Haverford West) to try and win the first foursomes match this morning against former 2006 GB & I Curtis Cup team member Tara Delaney and Niamh Kitching, who replaces Karen Delaney in the Irish line up.
This game proved to be very close with some outstanding golf played from both sides. Wales made the first move on the par 3, 165 -yard 3 with a par to win the hole and move to one up. Ireland won the next hole and halved the next two to bring the match back to all square. A birdie on the daunting 500-yard par five ninth hole, gave Ireland the lead to the turn. Shared scores on ten, kept Ireland ahead, until Wales won eleven with a par to a bogey to return the match to equal. Ireland pulled out another birdie on 12 to creep back ahead.
Ireland pared the 14th to move to two in front, halving the 15th to stay ahead. Ireland win the match by 2 & 1 on the 17th with a concession from Wales.
Match 2: Lydia Hall & Lucy Gould v Danielle McVeigh & Marian Riordan
Ireland won the first hole in this match, with Wales producing a fantastic birdie on the 2nd hole, with the match all square after five holes, Ireland secured a birdie on 340 yard par 4 to take charge of the match winning 7th, 9th and 10th holes to go ahead by three. Wales won the 12 to go two down with 6 to play. A birdie on 16th from Ireland confirms a match win of 4 & 2.
Match 3: Stephanie Evans & Tara Davies v Maura Morrin & Gillian O’Leary
Some outstanding golf played from both sides in this match with the the match remaining all square after six holes even with the Wales partnership producing three birdies on the front nine, at the 1st, 4th and 6th. A win on the 7th from a lost ball gave Ireland the lead by one and this remained the case and a birdie on the 12th hole gave Ireland the advantage as they move to three ahead with six holes to play.
Ireland remain 3 up after 15 holes, 16 was halved with bogeys resulting in a 3 & 2 victory for the Irish.
Match 4: Naomi Edwards & Kerry Smith v Jenna Wilson & Michele Thomson
An incredible display of birdies on the first two holes, helped the strong partnership of Edwards & Smith, 2007 Commonwealth team champions, go four up after 11 holes against Scottish Champions Michele Thomson and Jenna Wilson. Scotland win one back on the 12th hole with a par to take it back to three down.
A win for the Scots on the 14th takes the match back to England two up, where the score remained after a half on the 15th, 16th and 17th secured a point for England winning 2 & 1.
Match 5: Rachel Jennings & Danielle Montgomery v Laura Murray & Kelsey MacDonald
England dominated this game as they put together a 5-hole lead after twelve holes. The well suited pairing of Jennings, the 2006 English Champion and Montgomery who was the top pre-qualifier in the Women's Australian Open, worked well against a strong Scottish performance. Birdies on the 6th and 10th holes and a conceded point on the 13th clinched the match for England, 6 & 5.
Match 6: Rachel Bell & Liz Bennett v Emily Ogilvy & Carly Booth
The sucessful English partnership of Bell and Bennett take on the Scottish Girls' Champion, Carly Booth and US college graduate Emily Ogilvy were evenly matched after 12 holes. England move ahead after Scotland concede the 9th hole. A birdie two on the 10th takes the match back to even. England reverse this again on the 13th as they win this hole with a par 4.
Scotland fought back and carded a well deserved birdie on the 325-yard par 4 15th to take the match back to even. England took some chances and made some great putts in the last few holes to take control of this match and finish 2 & 1.
