Liz Bennett wins the South Atlantic Ladies Amateur

Great Britain & Ireland Curtis Cup Squad hopefuls Liz Bennett (Brokenhurst Manor) and Aberdeenshire champion Michele Thomson, moved a step closer to selection as they won first and third place in the prestigious Orange Blossom Tour's, South Atlantic Ladies Amateur Championship this weekend.
Rachel Jennings (Izaak Walton), a third member of the Ladies' Golf Union Squad and the halfway leader after rounds of 71 and 70, dropped down the leaderboard with a third-round 78, made up some ground with a closing 75 to share seventh place on 294.
Bennett, 25, the 2006 English women's stroke-play amateur champion signed off with a par 72 for a one-under-par total of 287. The 2007 Vagliano Trophy team player had earlier scored 73, 72 and 70.
Six squad members made the trip to Florida as prepartion for the Curtis Cup, which will be held May 30-June 1 at The Old Course, St. Andrews.
The American team for the Curtis Cup match will be announced within the next few days and the GB&I team will be announced in March.
The Orange Blossom Tour consists of 4 events staged at some of the best venues throughout Florida during the month of January.
The players now move onto Coral Ridge Country Club at Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to compete in the Ione D. Jones/Doherty Women's Amateur Championship.
