CURTIS CUP DEBUTS FOR FIVE OF GB&I TEAM AT DUN LAOGHAIRE
The Great Britain and Ireland team of eight for the 39th Curtis Cup match against the United States of America at Dun Laoghaire Golf Club, near Dublin, from June 10 to 12 has been named and will feature three players who have previously participated in the biennial transatlantic women's amateur international contest.
The Great Britain and Ireland team to challenge the United States of America, at Dun Laoghaire Golf Club, near Dublin from June 10 to 12, will warm up for the international contest with a "friendly" match against a team from Castle Golf Club on the south side of Dublin.
Hannah O’Sullivan, of Chandler, Ariz., the 2015 U.S. Women’s Amateur champion, was among the eight players named today by the United States Golf Association (USGA) to the USA Team for the 2016 Curtis Cup Match, to be conducted June 10-12 at Dun Laoghaire Golf Club in Enniskerry, Ireland, outside Dublin.
The Ladies’ Golf Union (LGU) and The R&A are to proceed with a merger of the two organisations.
Following an extensive consultation exercise, agreement has been reached on the merger of the two St Andrews-based bodies with the process due to be completed in the coming months.
The LGU organises a series of prestigious championships and international matches including the Ricoh Women’s British Open and the Curtis Cup and the merger will be an opportunity to further develop these world class events.
JOINT STATEMENT FROM THE LADIES’ GOLF UNION AND THE R&A
Exploratory discussions are underway between the Ladies’ Golf Union (LGU) and The R&A towards establishing a more closely coordinated working relationship and the possibility of a merger between the two organisations.
The Ladies Golf Union and IMG today can confirm a new five-year broadcast agreement for the Ricoh Women’s British Open with the UK’s two largest sports broadcasters, Sky and the BBC, running from 2017 – 2021, in an arrangement similar to that announced last week by the R&A for the Open Championship.
Lincolnshire Ladies' County Captain and seven times County champion, Helen Hewlett (nee Dobson) has accepted an invitation from the Ladies’ Golf Union, to be team manager of the Great Britain & Ireland teams for the Vagliano Trophy matches at Malone Golf Club, Belfast on June 26-27 and next year's Curtis Cup match at Dun Laoghaire Golf Club, near Dublin.
LGU CONGRATULATES VICE PRESIDENT ON HER NEW YEAR'S HONOUR
Yorkshire’s Sue Johnson, a Vice President of the LGU and one of the first Presidents of England Golf, has been made an OBE for services to golf in the New Year Honours list.
“This is a very great honour,” said Sue, who has held prominent positions within golf at national, county and club level. “I must be very lucky to be honoured for doing something which has given me the greatest pleasure.”
The United States Golf Association announced today that Robin Burke, of Houston, Texas, has been selected as captain of the 2016 USA Curtis Cup Team. The 39th Match will be played from 10-12 June. 2016 at Dun Laoghaire Golf Club near Dublin, Ireland. The Curtis Cup Match is an eight-female team competition between the USA and Great Britain and Ireland (GB&I).
LADIES' GOLF SADDENED AT THE LOSS OF CATHERINE BOOTH
Everyone at the LGU was saddened to hear of the death on Saturday of Vice-President Catherine Booth, after a long struggle with ill health. Catherine, who hailed from Clontarf in Ireland, was President from 2004-2007, and was a great supporter and promoter of ladies' golf throughout her life.
The 5 player GB & I team to defend the Astor Trophy title in Australia from 11-16th January has been named. A mixture of youth and experience has been selected to defend the Astor Trophy for Great Britain & Ireland in Australia.
England added the Senior Home Internationals trophy to the European Team title won earlier in the year, and at the same time celebrated the country's clean sweep in the three Ladies', Seniors. and Girls' Home Internationals in 2014.
BELFAST PAIR WINS PEUGEOT FOURSOMES AFTER STORMING FINISH
The Peugeot Coronation Foursomes champions for 2014 are Jenny Gibson and Marie Canavan from Belvoir Park, Belfast, who stormed their way to a great closing total of 39 points in the handicap stableford event on the Eden Course, St Andrews, just pipping Tina Earley and Elaine Coomber (Redlibbets) on a better inward half.
LADIES' GOLF MOURNS THE DEATH OF 3 TIME CURTIS CUP PLAYER RUTH SLARK (PORTER)
Everyone at the Ladies' Golf Union was saddened to hear of the death of Ruth Slark (nee Porter) on 15 September 2014. British Girls' Champion in 1956, Ruth went on to win the English Championship in 1959, 1961 and 1965, and was capped for England many times, particularly on 10 occasions in the Home International Matches.
Wales keep their hopes of retaining the Home International Matches title alive with a sound 2.5 to 0.5 win over Ireland, who beat England 6-3 on day 1. Becky Harries and Chloe Williams continued their unbeaten runs, with a 5&4 win over Amy Farrell and Sinead Sexton.
The singles started at 1.13, as scheduled, on a perfect windless day.
